There has been much talk lately, about the newly minted musical genre, “Chillwave”.
Who invented it?
Was it Alan Palomo of Neon Indian? Ariel Pink? Carles?
All of these seemed like valid answers until tonight. When I discovered this song…
ALL I WANNA DO by THE BEACH BOYS (Sunflower, 1970)
I couldn’t believe it when I heard this song.
It almost sounds like it could be a Washed Out song…
FEEL IT ALL AROUND by WASHED OUT
What do you think?
This guy is def on to something.
That Beach Boys track appeared on the Copper Tones: Naturalismo Summer Mix which showcased much of now popular glo-fi/chillwave talent.
It also reminds me of the Untitled song of a live Panda Bear set that circulated the blog in 2008. That song later ended up in a more fleshed out version on Anco’s MPP as “Guys Eyes”.

so i guess we’ve been duped by the whole Avey Tare (of Animal Collective) and 60 Watt Kid thing.
What we thought was the upcoming “leaked” Avey Tare album (entitled Down Under) was actually 9 tracks from the 60 Watt Kid album. I hadn’t heard of these guys before but they certainly have a new fan.
To give it some context, here were my thoughts on the music before I knew the truth:
i’ve always dug avey’s input and style when it comes to AC. sometimes his style is too experimental and harsh to warrant repeated listens in a party/group setting. “bluish” on MPP hinted at his epic pop potential and this debut fully realizes his genius.
it will do more than tie me over until the new panda bear drops.
This reminds me of the 90’s when I was a Weezer completest and scoured the Napster to acquire all the b-sides and rarities available. Many of the downloads labeled “Weezer” were in fact other bands like Ozma and Saves the Day. Obviously at the time I didn’t complain.
The good news is that there are 4 songs off the 60 Watt Kid album I haven’t heard yet. The better news is that we still have an Avey Tare album to look forward to.
And I can’t wait til someone mashes up both albums.

2’s or 4’s by Monogold

This album has been in heavy rotation all week. Solid stuff. You can buy it on their bandcamp for 10 bucks.
Highly recommended fans of The Forms, Panda Bear, Cocteau Twins, early Cold War Kids, early Yeasayer

Heard these guys on TheNewBlack and agree they are headed pleasant places. I would say a little more Avey Tare than Panda Bear tho.
At the 1:25 mark I was like “ahhhhh, I get it.” Another point for the San Diego scene.
