Gauntlet Hair: Heave.

“Imagine the gorgeous gents of Duran Duran dressing up as Liars and showing up to the beardo mountain Brooklyn commune to pants the guys in Yeasayer…”

It’s been far too long since we’ve posted something from Mexican Summer. Shame on us. To repent our sin, here’s the b-side to Gauntlet Hair’s freshly pressed (and hotly anticipated) 7”. I’ve been itching for more Gauntlet Hair ever since “I Was Thinking…” first tore up my speakers, and “Out, Don’t..”/”Heave.” deliver my fix quite nicely. While the jet-propelled (and oddly punctuated) “Out, Don’t..” breaks out the same dancey guitar stabs and soaring, rhythmic harmonies as “I Was Thinking…”, “Heave.” shows these guys in full-on attack mode. Pitting pounding, militant drums against a moaning buzz-saw, it grabs you by the neck and refuses to let go (if only it were two minutes longer).

Gauntlet Hair- Heave.

It’s amazing how lo-fi these guys are considering they sound sooo damn good.  However, “Out, Don’t..” is the track to put yr chips into on this 7”.  It basically follows the same formula (e.g., delayed guitar chirps and yelping reverby vocals) as “I Was Thinking…”.

Premiere | Dream Cop :: Warm Thrash (MillionYoung Remix)

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard from Blacksburg, Virginia’s Dream Cop, but that’s soon to change. He’s got a five-song EP entitled Basement Tapes coming out December 7th on Output Noise Records, and this “Warm Thrash” remix is the first taste from that release. Taking the original version and adding hints of his signature sound, MillionYoung turns this one into his own, especially during the last two minutes. It twinkles quite a bit more than Dream Cop’s original, but that’s to be expected with Mike Diaz in the mix.

It’ll be featured alongside both the original and extended versions of “Warm Thrash,” and accompanied by the title track and another remix, so be sure to grab the EP in December.

Bear Hands - Crime Pays

Photo by Ed Luna for JackinthePocket.com

This is just one of the funky fresh tracks from Bear Hand’s upcoming release Burning Bush Supper Club, due to drop November 2nd.   They put three new tasty tunes up on their brand new Bandcamp page to keep us teased.  This one, for free. I adore the thumping percussion, Dylan’s falsetto, not to mention the tasty bass licks. I caught up with them at their show in Columbus this summer, check out the interview on JackinthePocket.com.

Sandhills by The Coral

The Coral have been cranking out stuff for awhile now.  I remember listening to their albums back in the double ought and thinking “decent indie classic rock type of stuff with a spooky twist”.  Apparently they’ve matured into what you now here.  How laid back is that hooky chorus (reminds me of America)?  It’s like the fizz that comes off of a fresh poured diet coke.

Funky II by Turning Torso

I just played this album thru three times (3x) today because it’s damn easy to workgroove to.  Although it has a few standouts (Funky Junkie, Walker, Bossa Nube, Funky II), it’s the combination of the guitar work, the rough (but precise) drumming and the creative production (rando samples!) that make the project work as a whole.

Any of these songs would work on a solo acoustic guitar around a campfire but there is a certain depth in the lo-fi chill vibe that will have you spinning this in the background of your apt.  In other words: “would buy on vinyl”.

Get it on bandcampy for freeeeeeee.

Almost reminds me of some of that chill juice that Tommy Guerrero put out a few years ago but less Jack Johnson and more Whack Johnson.

Get it on bandcampy for freeeeeeee.

Broadheart by Glow Marrow

The title track off of Glow Marrow’s debut EP is quite epic for a fresh band on the scene.  The layering and guitar work go beyond the typical nostalgic lo-fi and I hear only visionary honesty when I listen.  Brillwave to the max.

These guys should tour with Electric Sunset.

You can download their tunage in all of it’s 320kps glory for free here.

From their website:

Hailing from North Hollywood by way of Thousand Oaks, Derek Coburn and Darin Green have been collaborating since their days as high school friends with a mutual affinity for writing songs together. After incorporating live electronics into their previously more bare bones sound, the duo formed Glow Marrow. With a focus on creating new textures over music that ranges from electro pop to stark acoustic guitar led lullabies, Glow Marrow is an expansion on the duo’s prior project, The Eye The Ear and The Arm. Glow Marrow have recently completed their debut EP, Broadheart and are currently working on a new release while performing throughout the West Coast.

NazcarNation Beautiful Brodown

PREMIERE: NAZCARNATION “Beautiful Brodown”

It’s been almost a year since we’ve heard from the boys of NazcarNation, and I’m stoked they finally dropped new indie rock goodness that is just plain great. The Los Angeles duo just finished their latest single, a beautifully infectious pop anthem with slightly tropical vibes, and playful lyrics that are guaranteed to make you smile.  Once you give this tune a listen, you’ll have it on heavy rotation in no time.

Cuz let’s face it. We can’t all be hipsters. I mean I don’t need glasses and I can’t really get skinny jeans over my J-Lo ass. Plus, listening to reverbed vocals and ambient droned out guitar sounds 24/7 would make any Whole Foods employee cop a tude. It’s just not that fun. Thank god for Nazcarnation. An island of awesome in a sea of “fuck you man.” Y’all can holler at me anytime. We can kick it for sure.

World Apart by The Sea of Cortez

“Make It Sound”, the full-length album from the Sea of Cortez was released today.  See what the hype is about and download the album from their bandcamp page.

This says it best:

A group of friends in LA who dig playing music. From atmospheric instrumentals to honest acoustic reflections, for the love of music, The Sea Of Cortez creates a diverse sound, rarely adhering to any single genre.

A New Town by Field Music

UK’s prog-pop duo, Field Music creates studio masterpieces inspired by 80’s pop-rock acts like XTC.  They do all the engineering, mixing and mastering themselves.   Their new album is (out February 2012) is not as ambitious as their last album, Measure, which had 20 tracks, but it falls closer to their classic Tones of Town.  We think the posted song above might hint at that thru its title.

Field Music are also responsible for one of the greatest music videos I saw in the oughts:
