It’s that time of the year again. Hard to believe it’s been three years. A lot changes in three years. It’s nice to have been able to look next to me these past three years, and see the same face. These annual mixtapes have come to serve as some chronicle of the passing years, the hopeful strength of long lasting love. It’s amazing to have three years pass, and feel as if the surface of what love is, and has to offer has only just begun to come into focus. So here’s to the years ahead, the love ahead, and the focus I might gain with them.

One Pacifico Swing by Hoodcats

Hoodcats is a brand new project out of Oakland. 3 dudes under the same roof. Stream/download their debut EP here.

Comprised of shortcircles (who drops his Plug Research debut next Tuesday) and future-poppin’ duo James & Evander, the Oakland trio have put together three songs of sample-based future-music that owe as much to stoney instrumental hip-hop as they do to bass-minded footwork and house. All now living under one roof in the outskirts of West Oakland, the producers’ current environment (which is highlighted by the never-ceasing presence of street felines, a.k.a. hood cats) is certainly reflected here, but there’s also a touch of playfulness to be heard with generous samples of Mark Morrison’s “Return of the Mac” and even Christina Aguilera’s “Genie In a Bottle” appearing amongst the glistening synths and frantic drum programming. -via mapzzz.com

These kids are from Paris but they sing in English. You should download their excellent debut EP for free on their bandcamp.

The instrument production is beautifully rowdy and the vocal phrasing can be David Byrne-ish at times (like on “Sun Way Too Low”).

Pure Bathing Culture Silver Shore’s Lake

I cannot wait for Pure Bathing Culture to release some new tunes. Until they do, this track will be on repeat, like it has been…for months. The band just played a sold out show at Doug Fir in Portland with my pals Radiation City, so felt the need to revisit this jam. This duo in general, but this jam in particular reminds me of The Carpenters mixed with Kool and the Gang, which inherently reminds me of my childhood because that’s all my parents listened to when I was growing up. Images of those moving ocean clocks that would change colors come to mind. Oh nostalgia.

I have a hunch PBC is putting some tunes out on either Secretly Canadian or Fat Possum, and for reasons I can’t reveal, possibly Domino, sometime this spring. The duo are also in the San Francisco indie rock outfit Vetiver, which is on Sub Pop. Guess we’ll have to wait and see. Love speculating though.
